The author of the words, whoever he may have been, had in mind the drinking-song in Fletcher's Bloody Brothers, from which he borrowed two lines,— " Best, while you have it, use your breath, There is no drinking after death."
The tune of Down among the dead men was a great favorite with the late Samuel Wesley, who used constantly to fugue upon it. |
